National Disability Employment Awareness Month: Becky's Story
During National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we are proud to share the success stories of clients who found meaningful employment through JCFS Chicago. This is Becky’s story.
Becky came to JCFS eagerly wanting to find a job in the retail industry. In 2019, she began working with one of our employment specialists to update her resume, practice interview skills, and brainstorm job ideas. Together, they worked to explore job leads and fill out applications. But when Covid-19 hit, Becky and her employment specialist had to shift gears. They worked on job readiness skills in their meetings and Becky attended weekly job readiness trainings via Zoom.
A year later, when the job market began to improve, Becky and employment specialist re-explored job options. In April 2021, Becky interviewed at HomeGoods and was offered the Merchandise Associate position. Her job responsibilities include ensuring cleanliness on the sales floor, stocking and organizing merchandise, and assisting customers.
Becky was provided job coaching to help her get acclimated to the job, and natural supports were also put in place. Becky has been thriving in her job and accomplishing her goals. Her managers and co-workers have been supportive and are happy to have Becky on the team. When asked why she loves her job, Becky says, “My workplace atmosphere and my coworkers make it an amazing place to work.”
Great job, Becky!
