Hebrew Learning Opens Students’ Spiritual Life
For Jewish students at the Knapp School & Yeshiva, like Jacob and Eva*, having Hebrew instruction incorporated into their daily curriculum creates opportunities for social, emotional, academic and Jewish success. Otherwise limited in their ability to access Hebrew learning, Jacob and Eva benefit from weekly visits from REACH educator Randi Loskove, a long-term volunteer at the school. Randi helps provide a Jewish connection to their studies through Hebrew engagement, which opens their spiritual life.
“When they learn a new letter, or read or write in Hebrew, it’s a steppingstone to a cultural connection within their families and Jewish world . They feel included in their community,” said Rabbi David Rosenberg, Director of Jewish Educational Studies at Knapp School & Yeshiva. “This not only improves their social and emotional wellbeing, it’s also good for their self-esteem.”
Learning Hebrew also helps improve Jacob and Eva’s school performance by enhancing cognitive skills like memory and problem-solving abilities. “For our students who have difficulties with classroom instruction, this additional resource is a real benefit. It helps increase their engagement and motivation in school,” adds Rabbi Rosenberg.
