Relationships

All relationships can be strained during times of fear and uncertainly – family, friendships, and romantic relationships.

  • In an unhealthy relationship, the current stressful situation might make things worse – increased tension or fighting, for example. If you are or someone you know someone is in an unhealthy or abusive relationship, you have options!
    • National Domestic Violence Hotline: CALL: 1.800.799.7233 or chat at thehotline.org
    • National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline: you can text the Helpline advocates 24/7 about anything ranging from questions about healthy dating to raising red flags about relationships. If you need help, reach out by calling 1.866.331.9474 or 1.866.331.8453 (TTY), text LOVEIS to 22522, or chat at loveisrespect.org .

Good relationships can be strained when you can’t be together.

  • If you are in a relationship and your only communication with your partner is through technology, make sure that you are communicating in a healthy way! Here are some tips:
    • If you are feeling pressure from your partner to stay in constant contact, if they are trying to get you to leave your house while your family is practicing social distancing, or if you sense that they are trying to control who you communicate with online (or otherwise), reach out to a trusted adult or trained professional.
    • If you are unsure, check out loveisrespect.org/ for helpful information and resources.
  • Physical distance might also add to desire or urging from one partner to sext or send photos. Remember to only do what you are comfortable with, and that pictures are permanent.

Response for Teens recommends:

Use this time to find other ways to connect to your partner.  What are topics that you do not get to talk about, creative interests that you do not get to share often? Intimacy when you cannot be physically close is about trust and support.  How can you be there for one another?
