Last year, Daniel came to JVS Career & Employment looking for a new career path. With the help of our employment specialists, Daniel was connected with a job opportunity at Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), which fulfilled his interests and met his needs as a professional who is Deaf. 

Daniel went through two rounds of interviews and in May 2019 BCBS offered Daniel the assistant conference services position, which he accepted. In his new job, Daniel collaborates with fellow team members to set-up conference rooms and troubleshoots the technology in the meeting rooms. To ease Daniel into his position, JVS employment specialists worked with BCBS staff to educate them about the accommodations Daniel would need.

“With his customer service experience, IT degree and incredibly friendly personality, I thought Daniel would shine in this opportunity,” said Eric Smithson, Employment Specialist for deaf and hard of hearing services at JVS.

JVS offers one-on-one training and placement help from counselors fluent in American Sign Language. With options to meet in person, through videophone or other technology, our employment specialists provide customized employment and job coaching services.

“As a deaf professional, I do not accept the words ‘I can’t.’ I make sure our deaf and hard of hearing clients realize their full potential and start saying ‘I can’,” added Eric.
