Migdal Oaz

Parents of children with disabilities often have many concerns about their child’s quality of life once their son or daughter reaches adulthood. Migdal Oaz, which means Tower of Strength in Hebrew, offers Jewish adults with disabilities an independent environment, which meets their unique residential needs.

As the state’s first residential facility for Jewish adults with disabilities, the program ensures that individuals with special needs can remain active in Jewish life. The importance of religious heritage and Jewish community life is stressed through the celebration Jewish holidays, including Shabbat, and the keeping of the laws of Kashrut.

'This program is critical for the adult disabled population – parents are clamoring for it," said Ellen Bronfeld, a parent advocate of the program. "We want to ensure that our children are part of the Jewish community as adults. After they are 21, many of the adults with disabilities have nowhere to turn, and exist rather than live vibrantly in our Jewish heritage.”

The residence, a fully-rehabbed home in West Rogers Park which meets special needs residence requirements, is staffed by on-site professionals 24 hours a day. Special attention is paid to residents' personal care skills, safety, social ability, health and work opportunities. By coordinating with community programs and resources, the staff enables residents to expand their possibilities and work towards their goals.
