Due to negative societal attitudes toward minoritized sexualities and gender identities, young people who identify as LGBTQ+ are at higher risk for anxiety, depression, social isolation, and experiences with violence. During adolescent years, normative struggles with identity formation and belonging are complicated by internalized stigma and shame for queer and gender-queer teens.
